Tom of Finland:Structural combing, montage and cause-and-effect chains

I was fortunate enough to participate in the dictation of the English part of this film, so I watched it twice and looked back on it with fondness. Let’s not talk about the thick cello and elegant classical music background, to share the story line as I understand it.

1. rabbit.

The opening credits, behind the stage, Tom chatting about the rabbit. “You can’t keep him in the closet.” “In the closet he’s hungry and thirsty.” There are two rabbits in the whole film, the one hopping on the battlefield and the one scurrying around in the hospital bed. The rabbit hops around in pursuit of happiness and freedom.

2. War.

On one side is the gunfire, on the other side is the repression and struggle of gay soldiers. While World War II ended, the war that gays faced never ended. Their war included the war of self-identification, and the war brought on by discrimination and the threat of disease. Tom was a brave soldier in every sense of the word.

3. paintings.

The main story line. The entire film unfolds in a reminiscent manner. Constantly interspersed with the details of Tom’s paintings and the playback of his memories. The small yellow picture represents the beauty of androgyny and the desire for freedom. It spreads successively in the form of dating and teasing tools, jerking off material, fashion trendsetters, anti-AIDS propaganda and sketching examples, from the cold and repressed years to the era of AIDS storm to the new era of openness, it spreads hope, freedom and truth.

4. Nipa

The young meat of Tom’s family, met by Tom’s paintings on a date and eventually became one of the lifelong companions (one of them) and spiritual pillars. The young actor is also very good, acting sunny and handsome, straightforward and firm, kind and loyal and delicate flirtatious. He played in Tom’s story has played the role of sex friends, family members, lovers, husband, party fags, housewives and career supporters, and finally died of cancer when also proudly did not take away a cloud.

5. yellow fabric

The yellow fabric appeared four times.

1. the officer wore a yellow coat, painted with heavy makeup, in their own home base party was taken.

2. Nipa said he wanted to build his own home with Tom, to have yellow curtains. Tom, however, said yellow is the color of dead gay.

3. Nipa was very sick, Tom finally took him to the fabric store to buy yellow cloth, laughing and saying yellow is the color of dead gay (referring to himself), Nipa smiled sweetly.

4. after Nipa’s death, Tom’s house hung a large yellow curtains, sending deep thoughts.

6. leather and uniform

The main elements of Tom’s paintings. Leather and uniforms in gay culture symbolize male masculinity, but also suggests SM fetish, the film avoids the latter and focuses on the former. These elements from the military life to the motorcycle team to the California party to the exhibition to the final party, through the end is the gay men’s reinterpretation of men, a kind of blood spurting homosexual gain.

7. officer

The role of the officer in the film has a number of big turns. The officer in the military is the spiritual leader in combat, the officer in life is the gay party leader, and the officer who is tragically arrested and rehabilitated ends up as a cowardly prisoner, eager to be broken straight. Of course the film in order to make this transformation more in line with reason, specifically inserted a German prison visit dialogue, the dialogue has reflected the officer’s hesitation and left and right. However, although he could not become a warrior like Tom, but also completed his historical task.

8. female characters

The officer’s wife turned a blind eye to his behavior. And Tom formed a three-person family with his sister and Nipa. She cannot appreciate Tom’s work and has never appreciated Tom’s style of life.

9. Fan

Doug is a big fan of Tom’s. He was once a small girl who was surprised by Tom’s paintings and hooked up with a handsome, muscular man who was stable (see the conversation that led to the “We” in the California meeting). Doug is soft on the outside, strong on the inside, and has gone from grateful fan to bold agent, whose support is also an important core of Tom’s success. 10. model Tom’s inspiration comes from life, his models used to come from the elements of life with their own play. Jack’s deathbed hopes that Tom will paint again, but it brings out the helplessness and fear of the AIDS era, Jack then encourages him to continue to fight for the last time. This encouragement and faith also ignited life like that little white rabbit. Tom ends by saying that everyone can be Tom’s man.
